In spring 2016, I made the mistake of listening to my friends and taking part in an event called Mudderella. The event consisted of various obstacles that racers must complete, all while running through the mud. My team, The Filthy Pearls, consisted of a group of 15 girls and two guys. We dressed up in different color tutus and pearls as we attempted to be cute. The course was spread out over a large field.

When my friends initially asked me to participate, they had been adamant that this would be a fun event. We decided to participate in a bit of training, which included a designated cardio day and a walking day. No one seriously trained because we had been told that this event was more laid back and fun, compared to a Tough Mudder event.

On the day of the event, the Filthy Pearls stood in the crowd waiting for the event to begin. We had no idea what was about to happen as the event director blew the whistle.  Immediately, teams around us broke into a fast run. By fast, I mean that Usain Bolt could have been struggling to get in front of these people. My teammates and I immediately realized that we were in trouble.

Each obstacle involved a different challenge. They ranged from climbing through the mud under barbed wire, ran through an area of mud with a team member across our backs, to climbing a rope ladder to slide down a mud-covered ramp. Each obstacle brought more exhaustion, more frustration and endless amounts of mud.

I began the race with my cute outfit on and ended the race five hours looking like a mud-covered monster. I ended up having to immediately change into my back up clothes and throw out all my belongings due to the mud. I was covered in cuts and bruises, with mud caked in my hair.

However, with each mistake comes a lesson. I realized how far I could push myself. I would never have thought I could complete the challenges and work with my teammates. It's extremely important in life to push yourself to accomplish something new and push yourself to achieve new goals. Having a support system, like teammates, can also help you to accomplish challenges.
